In this class, you will be mentored as you develop portraits of friends and family members using photographs as reference. You will learn about head proportions and the basics of mixing skin tones. Among the skills we aim to develop are design, composition, methods for transferring images to paper and canvas, and paint application. We will also discuss what constitutes a good photographic reference for drawing and painting. Oil or acrylic paint will both be taught, and is the student’s choice. (For oil painters, only gamsol and other low odor solvents are allowed.)

This is an independent working studio. Come work while getting help from local Eno Arts Mill artist, Kelly Oakes. She will offer guidance to advance your work to the next level through individual critiques and group demos. This isn’t for beginners but perfect for novices as well as artists who want to work in a supportive group environment. All painting mediums welcomed (only gamesol allowed for oils/solvents).

In this six-week workshop, you’ll learn to draw (or paint) the human figure in an objectively accurate manner using a live model, including analyzing underlying structure and proportions of male and female human figures and drawing the human figure in an expressive manner, with desired mood or emotional nuance.

Students will start by going over the concept of working from a live model with handouts and instruction, followed by quick demos followed by free work time and feedback from the instructor. This course aims to include a variety of models and body types as reference and may be different each week.

Kelly Oakes will lead a week-long artistic experiences in Tuscany from a base in the quaint and historic village of Montisi. Choose your method of capturing the beautiful landscape and Tuscan attributes…oil, acrylic, pastel, pencil/pen, watercolor, gouache. Kelly will guide the artistic endeavor as well as help you to do tours or other excursions. Come and fall in love with Montisi and Tuscany.
